Calculate landscaping materials needed for your project using the formula below:
Step 1 – Measure Area
Measure the length × width of the area in feet.
Step 2 – Choose Depth
Decide how deep you want the material (in inches).
Rock: 2–3" | Bark: 3" | Soil: 6"
Step 3 – Use This Formula
Cubic Yards = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 324
Example:
20 ft × 10 ft × 3" deep
→ (20 × 10 × 3) ÷ 324 = 1.85 cubic yards Order 2 cubic yards
Quick Reference Chart
| Cubic Yards | Fraction | 1" Deep | 2" Deep | 3" Deep | 4" Deep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.25 | ¼ yd³ | 81 sq ft | 40.5 sq ft | 27 sq ft | 20.25 sq ft |
| 0.50 | ½ yd³ | 162 sq ft | 81 sq ft | 54 sq ft | 40.5 sq ft |
| 0.75 | ¾ yd³ | 243 sq ft | 121.5 sq ft | 81 sq ft | 60.75 sq ft |
| 1.00 | 1 yd³ | 324 sq ft | 162 sq ft | 108 sq ft | 81 sq ft |
Tips
-
Always round up to the next ¼ yard.
